Tobia Ide (Georg Eckert Institute, Germany) <ide@gei.de> is organizing a training workshop on QCA at the First International Environmental Peacebuilding Conference, to be held at the University of California, Irvine from October 23 to 25 2019. This workshop would serve two main goals. First, it will provide a brief introduction into the method of QCA. In this context, the main principles and steps of a QCA will be explained and illustrated with examples from environmental security research. Second, scholars are invited to bring their own project ideas and papers for discussion and feedback by experienced QCA users.
Scholars with experience in using QCA to study the relationship between the environment, conflict, and peace are invited to contribute, for instance by presenting their own research or by giving a brief introduction into a specific aspect of QCA. If interested, please see the call for participants and contact Dr. Ide by February 8.

Major funding obtained: For a project titled "ACCORds: Advancing Configurational Comparative Research Methods", Alrik Thiem has been awarded a Swiss National Science Foundation Professorship, funded with 1.4 million Swiss Francs. This project aims to enhance the functionality of configurational methods such as QCA and CNA, to address broader theoretical and epistemological questions, and to develop corresponding software in order to make all advances publicly available to the scientific community. As part of ACCORds, Alrik Thiem is also welcoming suggestions from applied researchers to collaborate on empirical work in any area. More information can be found on Alrik Thiem's website. We congratulate Alrik on this achievement!

COMPASSS Statement on Rejecting Article Submissions because of QCA Solution Type
It has come to the attention of COMPASSS that some anonymous peer reviewers have rejected empirical QCA manuscript submissions solely or primarily due to the choice of solution type presented. After discussion between the Management Team and Steering Committee, we have adopted the following statement reproving this practice: COMPASSS Statement on Rejecting Article Submissions because of QCA Solution Type.

Apologies for the recent lack of updates; we have been making a number of changes behind the scenes. The most important (and least visible) is that we've moved the site to a new server. This was the first step in a larger redesign of the site that we will be pursuing over the next two years in order to enhance its utility and usability, ease maintenance, and keep up with the rapidly growing interest in CCMs.
If you would like to help with this redesign, please email Claude Rubinson. You do not need any specialized technical skills, although knowledge of HTML/CSS and/or graphic design ability would be especially appreciated.
Some of the (visible) recent updates include:
- A new bibliography page, with books maintained in a WorldCat list and journal articles in a Zotero database.
- New conferences, workshops, and CFPs added to the events page, including a CFP for the first International QCA Young Researcher Workshop.
- Updates to the software page, including the addition of the software packages EvalC3 (for Excel) and LogicOpt (for R)

From Carsten Schneider:
As you may know, APSA's Qualitative and Multi-Method Research section is currently running a deliberative process about research transparency for qualitative empirical scholarship. The QTD is a broadly inclusive process through which a wide range of qualitative communities are thinking through the meaning, costs, benefits, and practicalities of transparency for the types of inquiry in which they engage. At the end of the process, the QTD Working Groups will produce a set of statements that articulate understandings and practices of research transparency that are relevant for different forms and contexts of qualitative research. These statements will be an invaluable resource for a wide range of constituencies grappling with issues of research transparency, from journal editors to researchers and graduate students. From now until Dec. 1, the QTD Working Groups — each of which is focused on a particular method or context of qualitative research — are consulting with scholars who use and are knowledgeable about that form of inquiry. I am a member of the Working Group on "Algorithmic Analytic Approaches", which covers both QCA and automated content analysis. It would be enormously valuable to get your thoughts on some of the issues our Group is considering. We have posted some specific questions on the Group's discussion forum, which is here: https://www.qualtd.net/viewforum.php?f=23.
To post "on the record," if you're not already registered on the qualtd.net site, please first fill out the very short registration form, here: "https://www.qualtd.net/ucp.php?mode=register
We are very keen to hear your thoughts. I'm also happy to have a one-on-one email exchange or Skype call about these issues if that would be more convenient for you. The main thing is to get your input as we think through the meaning and practice of transparency for set-theoretic comparative methods.
